BBC Binges

As we approach the final months of lockdown, time is running out for binging those boxsets you promised yourself you’d watch. If, however, you’re at a loss for what series to check out before life returns to normal, those lovely folks at the BBC have got plenty of choices for you to scratch that itch. With laughs, knowledge, and thrills on offer, we take a look at some of the best boxsets you can pick up today.

Delivering some much-needed laughs during the pandemic was this hilariously wry series starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen as themselves, bickering their way through Zoom rehearsals of Six Characters in Search of An Author so that they can launch in the West End as soon as theatres reopen. In the style of Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip series, Staged sees its’ two leads affectionately sending themselves up in the witty and surprisingly moving series that offers an often painfully relatable look at the mundanity of lockdown. Featuring a whole host of guest stars and some of the best-written comedy in years, Staged is essential.

If the madness of this pandemic is getting you down, look no further than the soothing tones of David Attenborough and the mesmerising imagery of A Perfect Planet. The latest in the long line of BBC nature documentaries, this beautiful five-part series is packed with some of the most breath-taking visuals yet which are all the more stunning in 4K UHD. It is a truly astounding and inspiring series that feels like a sum of all that has come before it in the various Planet Earth and Blue Planet series, while BBC’s historic move of making the packaging of this release totally sustainable is one that we can only hope other labels will follow in the coming years.

A Perfect Planet is available now on digital, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.

One of the most acclaimed crime shows of the millennium, Spiral (or Engrenages as it is known in its native French) is one of the most compelling and brutal dramas you’ve probably not seen. Set on the mean streets of Paris over eight gripping seasons, this darkly twisted police procedural is full of all of the usual genre hallmarks – corruption, murder and investigation – but the result is a series that feels fresh thanks to its brutal and shocking insight into the world it portrays. It’s an unforgettable series that gets better and better with each season, and its comparisons to HBO’s celebrated series The Wire are much deserved. Spiral is, simply, a masterpiece of crime television and you owe it to yourself to step into its violent, volatile world.

All eight seasons of Spiral are available now on digital and DVD.
