There’s nothing like going on a 100 mph high-octane adventure without having to leave the comfort of the cinema. We might be Highway Code abiding citizens in real life, but when it comes to movies, there’s no harm in taking the things up a gear. Take, for instance, the example of Hurricane Heist’s dramatic high-speed chase.. In reality we’d be cowering in a corner waiting for the whole thing to literally blow over, but thanks to the magic of cinema, we can at least pretend we’re hardcore adrenaline junkies.
To celebrate the release of Hurricane Heist in cinemas on April 6th, we’ve been looking back at our favourite movie getaways, so buckle-up and join the fun…
Hurricane Heist (Releases April 6th)
A group of ambitious thieves come up with the ultimate heist, planning to steal $600 million from a U.S. treasury facility using a hurricane as their cover. But as the storm gets significantly upgraded, their plans fall apart, sucking three unlikely heroes into the action. Directed by The Fast And The Furious’s Rob Cohen and starring Toby Kebbell (A Monster Calls), Maggie Grace (Lost), Ryan Kwanten and Ralph Ineson (Games of Thrones) this high-octane adventure will leave you clinging to the edge of your seat.
Baby Driver (2017)
Written and directed by Edgar Wright, this incredibly choreographed action adventure follows Baby (Ansel Elgort), a music loving loner who’s coerced into working as a getaway driver for a shady criminal overlord. One for movie fans who like some beats with their braun.
The Town (2010)
Directed by and starring Ben Affleck, this drama tells the story of a longtime bank robber who falls for a former hostage (Rebecca Hall) while manoeuvring himself away from the FBI Agent in charge of the case (Jon Hamm). The intelligent story never once takes its foot off the pedal.
Drive (2011)
Nicolas Winding Refn’s neo-noir crime thriller made an icon of Ryan Gosling, who plays the film’s central mysterious stunt driver-cum-getaway driver. Thanks to the incredible car chase depicted in the first ten minutes, this film has been described as having the best opening credits ever.
Fast Five (2011)
It’s hard to know where to start as far as top car chases go in the Fast franchise, but the fifth installment’s climatic heist where the gang tow an entire bank vault through the streets of Rio De Janeiro is definitely a key contender. Scientifically questionable but visually awesome.
The Italian Job (1969)
Despite spawning a more recent Hollywood remake, this comedy caper can’t be beaten. With a pacy soundtrack provided by Quincy Jones, it follows the story of a British crook (Michael Caine) who robs gold ingots in Italy with the help of a computer expert (Benny Hill) and trusty Mini Cooper.
Bullitt (1968)
We don’t know which has got more twists – the streets of San Francisco where the film’s set or the plot it follows…This tense and gritty thriller includes one of the most famous car chases ever filmed, which is made all the more cooler by Steve McQueen being behind the wheel.
Thelma & Louise (1991)
Directed by Ridley Scott, this road movie might be more about friendship than engines, but it’s climatic car chase still deserves a special place in history. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon take the central roles while the supporting cast includes Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, and Brad Pitt in his first big movie role.
