Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag is a slick, modern spy thriller with tight plotting, sharply written dialogue, and that cool, effortless style Soderbergh does so well that we haven’t seen like this since the Ocean’s trilogy. With an emphasis on sophisticated storytelling over explosions, the whole thing has this smooth, old-school vibe and feels like the mature, grown-up filmmaking we just don’t get enough of in the current cinema landscape of soulless franchise blockbusters. And at just 90 minutes, you really can’t go wrong. The second collaboration between Soderbergh and writer David Koepp this year alone, Black Bag is a masterclass in efficient storytelling and direction, and a wonderful throwback to a more sophisticated era of cinema.
