Count Duckula: The Complete Collection

There are only two acceptable answers to the question: who’s your favourite vampire. If you’re American, it has to be Sesame Street’s Count von Count. If you’re a Brit, it’s Count Duckula. Sure, Christopher Lee may have smouldered, but nothing beats a vegetarian vampire duck, especially when he’s animated by Cosgrove Hall.

If you were too young to remember this very British slice of silliness then you’re in luck. Because this month, Fabulous Films are releasing the complete series in a seven-disc set. That’s a whopping 1,459 minutes of Generation X comfort viewing.

Airing between 1988 and 1993, Count Duckula was a spin-off from Cosgrove Hall’s other TV classic, Danger Mouse. In fact, Count Duckula was a recurring Danger Mouse villain, having once teamed up with DM’s arch-enemy, Silas Greenback.

Nickelodeon commissioned Count Duckula after one of their executives saw him guesting in Danger Mouse — which had been a huge hit for the channel. And Duckula turned out to be equally successful thanks to its signature blend of knowing references and schoolyard humour.

Barry Clayton narrates the beginning and end of every Count Duckula episode in a parody of Vincent Price’s iconic voice overs. The rest of the cast consisted of David Jason (Only Fools and Horses), Jack May (Adam Adamant Lives!) , Brian Trueman, Jimmy Hibbert and Ruby Wax.

So why not pay a visit to Castle Duckula, where, while the animation may not have a 21st Century gloss, but the humour is top-notch and the puns are plentiful.

Extras include:

  • Interview with Brian Cosgrove.
  • Interview with John Doyle.
  • How to Draw Count Duckula with Mike Whaite.
  • Stills Gallery.
