Samuel LoveDemons of the Mind and Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb, both released in 1971, showcase Hammer at its more experimental in the 1970s, blending psychological horror and occult themes as they moved away from the more gothic styles they remain most well known for. Recently restored by StudioCanal as the fourth and fifth entries in its 4K UHD series of Hammer titles from the decade following Scars of Dracula, The Horror of Frankenstein and Fear in the Night, these essential releases highlight a growing reappraisal of the studio’s later work. Both films look and sound magnificent, and the selection of new and archival special features alongside a packed booklet give plenty of fascinating insight into these films and their legacy.
Demons of the Mind
One of Hammer’s most ambitious and under-appreciated films, Demons of the Mind explores Baron Zorn’s (Robert Hardy) conviction that his son Emil (Shane Briant) and daughter Elizabeth (Gillian Hills) are suffering from a hereditary madness. In an attempt to contain their insanity, he keeps them imprisoned and drugged, yet these measures are not enough to stop his children from expressing their decadent desires and violent natures. Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb
At the moment archaeologist Julian Fuchs (Andrew Keir) and his expedition team discover the tomb of the evil ancient Egyptian Queen Tera (Valerie Leon), his daughter Margaret (also Leon) is born exactly in Tera’s image. Years later, Corbeck (James Villiers) wishes to resurrect Tera and use her immense power for his own nefarious ends. With Margaret’s help, they hunt down the relics required for the occult ceremony in which Tera’s soul, that has been sojourning in the identical body of Margaret, will be transferred to her preserved corpse…
