In the pantheon of war movies, there are some that have stood the test of time as true masterpieces. Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket is one of those films. Raw, powerful, and often disturbing, this haunting snapshot of the Vietnam War is a film that only Kubrick could’ve pulled off. Now available on 4K UHD Blu-ray courtesy of Warner Bros Home Entertainment, it’s time to put on your war face.

Following a platoon of U.S. Marines through their boot camp training to their experiences in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive, Full Metal Jacket is a hard-hitting look at the effects of war on soldiers. Whether struggling under the abuse of their drill instructor (R. Lee Ermey) or witnessing the bloody horrors of war in Huế, the film is a harrowing watch that feels as shocking now as it ever has.

Revisiting Full Metal Jacket is an interesting experience, as it is fascinating to see just how many of the film’s scenes and dialogue have entered pop culture – mainly in the form of memes. Ermey’s performance as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman is absolutely one of the film’s most iconic elements in this sense, and it is certainly deserved that audiences celebrate his work so much – his towering performance is utterly terrifying and unforgettable, as well as endlessly quotable. Ermey, originally hired just as a technical advisor on the film, had actually served as a drill instructor in ‘Nam and was able to use his experience to ad-lib much of his offensive dialogue.

The film looks and sounds mesmerising on the 4K format, thanks to this passionate release from Warner Bros. One of the finest films ever made, Full Metal Jacket’s 4K re-release is quite simply an absolute must-own for any self-respecting collector.
