Film Review

Another terrifying ‘video nasty’ long-thought lost, those wonderful folks at 88 Films deliver once again with hidden gem Night of the Demon; a 1980 Bigfoot horror restoration scanned in 4K from the original 35mm answer print and loaded with bonus features.

Described as “the best and bloodiest Bigfoot movie ever made” by, this ultraviolent and chaotic creature feature is played totally straight-faced and yet there is so much delight to be had in its absolutely absurd delivery. This is one of those films that has you laughing and asking “what the f**k am I watching”, but loving it. For the most part, anyway – some of the more sexual content certainly lives up to the ‘nasty’ side of video nasty.

But on the whole, Night of the Demon is a hell of a ride packed with violent thrills, brutal kills, and laugh-out-loud absurdity – and it is certainly a film that is ripe for reappraisal. Perhaps this glorious new release from 88 Films will grant a new life to the grisly shocker.

If that wasn’t enough, there is a downright staggering array of supplemental features included. With 5½ hours of bonus including interviews, a fascinating video essay, a previously unreleased 1964 feature from Jim L. Ball and John Quick and the acclaimed video nasty documentary Ban the Sadist Videos, this could just be the most loaded and definitive release of a film from this genre ever to reach home entertainment. Add to that a loaded booklet, a double-sided poster and a beautiful slipcase with new artwork from Joel Robinson and this is truly a smorgasbord of delights for fans of cheap, trashy 1980s horror. An absolute revelation and a strong early contender for the finest physical release of 2022.
