In 2009, Entertainment Weekly published the ’50 Sexiest Movies Ever’ list. If you’ve seen Out of Sight before, you’ll understand completely why it took the top spot. And if you haven’t, boy are you in for a treat. Steven Soderbergh’s 1998 crime caper is right up there with the best of the genre, and certainly one of the top films of the 1990s.

Adapted from the novel of the same name by the great Elmore Leonard, Out of Sight feels effortlessly cool. Every frame is bursting with style and swagger, while Scott Frank’s rapidfire wit-filled and non-linear screenplay could easily rival Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Add to that a killer soundtrack and some fantastic performances from two of 90s Hollywood’s sexiest stars, and you’ve got yourself a hell of a ride.

George Clooney delivers his finest and most charismatic performance as Jack Foley, a silver-tongued bank-robber. After busting out of jail with the help of his pal Buddy (Ving Rhames), he finds himself face-to-face with US Marshal Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez). One kidnapping later, and Jack & Karen are closer than they ever imagined – eventually, proving that you can find romance anywhere. But don’t worry, manly men among you. This is a crime caper through-and-through, with one of the best climaxes in the history of the genre.

But upon release, the film didn’t exactly blow up like it should’ve. “Even though it didn’t do really well box office-wise – we sort of tanked – it was a really good film”, Clooney said in an interview. It was a really good film, and still is. At least now it has the audience it deserves.

Out of Sight is one of the sexiest, coolest and most entertaining caper films ever made and with a new Blu-ray release out on shelves now, anyone out there who doesn’t yet own the film should seriously think about changing that.
