Samuel LoveGeorges Franju’s Eyes Without a Face, or Les Yeux sans visage, remains one of cinema’s most haunting horror films. BFI’s Synopsis
After his daughter Christiane (Edith Scob) is horribly disfigured in a car accident he caused, the brilliant and obsessive plastic surgeon Dr. Genessier (Pierre Brasseur) is driven mad with guilt. As atonement, the doctor, aided by his loyal assistant Louise (Alida Valli), lures young women to his secluded chateau and takes them to his secret laboratory to surgically remove their faces with the hope of grafting them on to his daughter’s ruined features and restoring her former beauty. But will Christiane allow him to succeed in his dangerous experiments?
BFI’s new 4K UHD release is impeccable. The transfer is breathtaking with rich contrast and black levels, razor-sharp detail, and the beautifully preserved grain structure. This is a truly magnificent disc that compliments the film’s iconic, chilling imagery – the infamous face transplant scene is more disturbing than ever at this level of stunning clarity.
Eyes Without a Face is not conventional horror; indeed, there’s been nothing like it since. It’s slow, melancholic, and lingers in the mind rather than aiming for quick shocks. Consider Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho released the same year – although still cerebral, it is a far more traditional horror that has had countless imitators since. Eyes Without a Face remains a uniquely haunting and tragic experience that few filmmakers have even dared attempt to recapture.
One of the most unique and timelessly harrowing horror films of all time, Eyes Without a Face’s long overdue 4K UHD release has been worth the wait and should be a priority this Halloween.
