Blade Runner 2049 Storyboards Wows Fans
In 1982, film audiences were to experience a bold new depiction of the future with Ridley Scott’s ground-breaking film, Blade Runner. Sadly, the unknown director’s adaption of Philip K Dick’s ideas-heavy Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, found itself pitted against Spielberg’s ET at the box office—and it failed to do the business. Yet, despite its lack of commercial success, Blade Runner has continued to be hailed as one of the best sci-fi films of all time. Its haunting soundtrack and iconic cyber-noir visuals, won both Oscar nominations, as well as a Los Angeles Film Critics Association award for best cinematography, and BAFTAs for the startling effects work of Douglas Trumbull, Richard Yuricich and David Dryer.
After decades of discussions of possible sequel, in 2017 director Denis Villeneuve took on what he would later describe as one of the riskiest decisions of his career— Blade Runner 2049. The film further explored Scott’s unique ‘future noir’ world, this time following a young blade runner, K (Ryan Reynolds) whose discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former blade runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for some thirty years.
Villeneuve needn’t have worried. Blade Runner 2049 was a huge critical success and was nominated for—and won— Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Production Design.
Titan’s Blade Runner 2049: The Storyboards is a celebration of the rarely-seen artwork that was key in building the harsh, yet strangely beautiful, environments in the film. This remarkable book is sure to appeal to both bona fide film fans and those who love art, with 224 pages of beautifully-rendered storyboards, including those for scenes that were later altered or cut from the final film entirely. Additionally, in-context commentary from storyboard artists Sam Hudecki and Darryl Henley add depth and interest to the unfolding story of a film that became one of cinema’s most hotly anticipated sequels.
Highlighting the evocative work by artist Sam Hudecki—filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s long-time pre-visualist—and Darryl Henley, Blade Runner 2049: The Storyboards is a companion volume to the hugely popular making-of books, The Art And Soul of Blade Runner 2049, and its follow-up, Blade Runner 2049: Interlinked—The Art.
