June 2013 at BFI Southbank
With a nod to the British summertime underway, the BFI Southbank summons a programme in June that recognises some of the most significant contributors to film both at home and overseas.
Having written and acted in some of contemporary cinema’s more notable films, Werner Herzog is celebrated in June with a series of special screenings and an in depth look into the director’s career. Included in this season is an extended run of Aguirre, Wrath of God which is rereleased by the BFI on the 7th of June.
A collection of popular Japanese cinema from the 60s and 70s will be highlighted also this month with Seasons in the Sun: The Heyday of Nikkatsu Studios. Inspiration for the likes of John Woo and Quentin Tarantino, titles such as Branded to Kill and Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter will be featured in this colourful programme.
Also include is the anticipated Much Ado About Nothing as adapted by the director that can seem to do no wrong Joss Whedon. Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight (main picture) also comes with much trepidation from fans of the film’s predecessors. Starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, we join the couple nine years since they first met, this time in Greece.
