Most Awkward Film Couples
Everyone loves a perfectly matched, sweet and romantic couple you can root for in movies. But sometimes, the less conventional couple has its charm – or at least is fun to watch! To celebrate the release of TED 2 on Blu-ray and DVD on November 23rd, we’ve made a list of some of the most awkward, uncomfortable and downright bizarre couples in film.
Ted & Tami-Lynn, Ted 2 (2015)
After becoming an unconventional item in the first movie, the world’s first woman-bear couple find themselves in a tricky situation: in order to have children Ted must prove he is human in a court of law! If anyone can get themselves out of this predicament, it’s Ted and Tami-Lynn – the couple are best known for their wild, outrageous behaviour. Forget being awkward – if anyone can make others around them feel awkward, it’s these two!
Megan & The Air Marshal, Bridesmaids (2011)
Megan is one of the most sharp-minded and outspoken bridesmaids we have ever come across. Her attention to detail and perseverance landed her the shy, reserved, is-he-or-isn’t-he air marshal she meets on the plane. Their common interests and particularly niche, intense jobs lead to some particularly unique after-hours activities. Make sure to watch the Bridesmaids credits all the way through for a romantic surprise…you have been warned!
Stu & Jade, The Hangover (2009)
Stu and Jade’s unconventional relationship begins like all good romantic stories – getting hitched in Vegas. Once Jade joins the frat pack and puts together the pieces of their bachelor party (along with her one year old son Carlos), Stu’s relationship with the stripper begins to blossom. She even helps the frat pack win a high-stakes poker game! Nobody saw it coming, but this pairing just might be the sweetest relationship you’ll find in the whole of the Hangover Trilogy – even if it’s more than just a little awkward.
Albert & Allegra, Hitch (2005)
Successful yet socially awkward Albert (Kevin James) hires relationship expert Hitch (Will Smith) to win the heart of his dream woman, Allegra. Albert is clumsy and can’t turn on the charm around Allegra, so Hitch tries a whole load of different techniques to normalise Albert’s behaviour. However it turns out that Albert’s awkwardness is the very thing that Allegra ends up falling in love with! This couple gives us hope that all kinds of people fall in love – not just Hollywood studs!
Bridget Jones & Mark Darcy, Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is one of the many unlucky-in-love women who just keeps going for the wrong guy. When she finally does meet a suitable date, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), it’s fair to say that the two didn’t quite meet eye-to-eye; at every encounter Bridget managed to turn an ordinary situation into an embarrassment. Yet it’s those endearing moments that made Mark fall in love with Bridget, and the reason they are one of our favourite awkward on-screen couples.
Donkey & Dragon, Shrek (2001)
The moment the fierce, fire-breathing Dragon set eyes on foolish, wise-cracking Donkey, we saw her heart melt on screen. Not only did their romance enable Shrek to save Princess Fiona, but the unstoppable team of a donkey and a dragon (and their adorable mutant babies) saved the day on multiple occasions. Donkey and Dragon couldn’t have crossed paths at a better time; Donkey was rejected from society and was desperately seeking accepting company, while Dragon had been cast to protect the Castle. Dragon had been waiting for her own Prince Charming to arrive, it seems!
Jim & Michelle, American Pie (1999)
Jim (the high school laughing stock) and Michelle (the band camp geek) arguably became one of the most hilarious couples on screen. As socially awkward individuals they brought out the best awkward traits in each other, and never failed to impress over the course of the three American Pie movies with their innovative mannerisms and kind hearts.
