To mark the release of Under the Skin on DVD and Blu-ray on 21st July 2014, FilmJuice Editor Alex Moss takes a look back at the sexiest female aliens to have graced cinema screens over the years. From the surreal to the outright hot this list will make you wish on shooting stars. (WARNING: This feature contains SPOILERS for Under The Skin).
Famke Janssen – The Faculty
Robert Rodriguez’s riff on all things high school and ‘80s body-snatcher genre manages to brilliantly subvert everything on offer and nothing represents this more than Famke Janssen’s portrayal as schoolteacher Miss Elizabeth Burke. At first all timid and easily dominated by bad boy Josh Hartnett she soon changes her tune when she becomes one of the alien number. The result is every teen boys wet-dream as this teacher gets seriously sexy and just a little bit naughty. Never has anyone dreamed of detention so much, until she loses her head a little bit.
Natasha Henstridge – Species
Cashing in on the erotic thrillers of the 1990s, Species managed to create one of cinema’s most sexy female aliens by casting the delectable Natasha Henstridge. Created in a lab from human and alien DNA, Henstridge plays Sil – an alien who has one agenda in mind; to reproduce with a human male in order for her species to begin to take over the world. Curses to Forrest Whitaker and Michael Madsen for making her job that much harder.
Kim Basinger – My Stepmother Is an Alien
How do you get over the fact your stepmother is an alien? Pretty easily if she looks like Kim Basinger. Sent to earth to locate a scientist whose work has inadvertently brought her here, Basinger injects Celeste with a wonderful sense of naïve charm mixed with enough sexual energy to give the Large Hadron Collidor something to worry about.
Sigourney Weaver – Alien Resurrection
How do you bring back one of sci-fi’s most iconic leading ladies having killed her in the previous film? When it’s written by none other than Joss Whedon, always a champion of strong female characters, you bring her back as an alien-human hybrid dressed in a leather suit and let her give every hardened crook and soldier a good run for their money. She also knows how to sink a mean three-pointer on the basketball court.
Zoe Saldana – Avatar
While some may have labelled the aliens from James Cameron’s Avatar as giant Smurfs, Saldana proved there was more here than just big blue cartoons. Her motion-capture performance as Neytiri oozes sex appeal as she slinks around the Pandorum jungle. It’s no wonder Sam Worthington chooses to go “native” when she’s batting her eyes at him.
Olivia Wilde – Cowboys & Aliens
The moment Olivia Wilde shows up in Cowboys & Aliens as nothing more than a mere saloon girl you suspect something isn’t quite right with this picture. Of course Daniel Craig finds out the hard way as he soon learns that she is in fact a planet hoping alien. No glowing fingers here although she is want to immerge from the flame of a campfire without much clothing to speak of. Pause buttons around the world are worn down thanks to Wilde.
Tahnee Welch – Cocoon
It’s no wonder that Steve Guttenberg gets all hot under the colour for aliens when he’s being wooed by Kitty, played by Tahnee Welch, in Cocoon. Emerging from a swimming pool all glowing and gorgeous it’s enough to raise the temperature in that pool to boiling point. It helps that Tahnee is the daughter of iconic movie bombshell Raquel Welch. It’s all in the genes.
Milla Jovovich – The Fifth Element
When Earth is threatened by a dark force humanity’s only hope of survival lies in The Fifth Element. Thankfully for us she comes in the form of the stunning redhead Leeloo, played with adorable sex appeal by former model Milla Jovovich. Not only does she arrive in style, wearing one of sci-fi’s sexiest outfits, she is also able to dispense bad guys with the grace of a jaguar and the power of a Hulk.
Teresa Palmer – I Am Number Four
While protagonist Number Four spends his time running from evil aliens and moping over earth girl Dianna Agron, Number Six is taking names and kicking ass. Palmer brings sexy back to Number Six by being tougher than a bag of Chuck Norrises and sassier than a Film Noir femme fatale.
Scarlett Johansson – Under the Skin
Bringing Michel Faber’s sci-fi novel Under The Skin to life was never going to be an easy task but director Jonathan Glazer made his job considerably easier when he cast Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. Playing a seductive woman who travels the streets of Scotland luring unsuspecting men into her white van this is one female of the species that is undoubtedly more deadly than the male. Johansson’s ability to ooze sex appeal while conveying her alienation from the world around her only heightens her attractiveness.
Under the Skin is released on DVD and Blu-ray on 14th July 2014 from STUDIOCANAL
