From producer and director Steven Spielberg, with a script by screenwriter and playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America), comes West Side Story. An adaptation of the 1957 musical, the film tells the tale of forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and winning unanimous critical acclaim, the film confidently stands alone without feeling like another needless remake. While allegations against lead Ansel Elgort have certainly tainted the film somewhat, there’s no denying the masterful craft behind the film, resulting in one of Spielberg’s finest films in years.
