Masaaki Yuasa’s historical, rock musical, buddy-comedy, anime, Inu-oh comes to cinemas this September. Yes, you read that right. Inu-oh is a film that defies both genre labels and stereotypes– and the result is glorious.
Based on a novel by renowned Japanese author Hideo Furukawa and inspired by history, Inu-oh tells the story of a young man who aspires to be a performer, but is shunned because of his unique physical appearance. However, he can hear the voices of samurai who died fighting for the historic Heike clan 200 years ago, and each time he performs their stories, a part of his human appearance is transformed. After a fateful encounter with the blind biwa priest, Tomona, the two join forces to break each other’s curse… and climb the ladder to stardom.
However, in an era of political turmoil, not everyone is ready for the true story of the Heike and tragedy lurks just off-stage.
Inu-oh is the latest anime film by award-winning director, Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game and The Night is Short, Walk on Girl), celebrated for his fluid style and bold visuals. This latest venture sees him joined by the remarkable talents of experimental rock guitarist and composer Otomo Yoshihide, and character designer Taiyo Matsumoto, who created the Eisner Award-winning Tekkonkinkreet and Ping Pong. Together, they craft characters whose intricate yet passionate movements enthral with performances on par with real-life superstars.
Inu-oh will literally and metaphorically rock you.
Anime Limited will be releasing Inu-oh exclusively in cinemas in the United Kingdom and Ireland from 28th September 2022.
