Joe Hisaishi in Vienna

Mamoru Fujisawa, known professionally as Joe Hisaishi, is a Japanese composer of over a hundred film scores.

Known primarily for his lush Studio Ghibli soundtracks, Hisaishi’s collaboration with Hayao Miyazaki has been compared to that of Steven Spielberg and John Williams.

From anime to sci-fi, from war dramas toDavid Attenborough nature documentaries, Hisaishi’s beautiful compositions may have helped define early anime, but his work has always gone beyond genre.

On 30th March last year, Joe Hisaishi made a triumphant debut on the podium of a sold-out Vienna Musikverein, conducting a programme of his own works. That work, Joe Hisaishi in Vienna, is now available from Deutsche Grammophon. This is the world-renowned, multi-award-winning Japanese composer’s second album for famous the Yellow Label.

His new recording follows on from his immensely successful DG debut, A Symphonic Celebration – Music from the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki, which was one of the best-selling classical albums worldwide in 2023.

Joe Hisaishi in Vienna presents two world premiere recordings —-  Symphony No. 2, captured live at the Musikverein with the Wiener Symphoniker, and Viola Saga, featuring soloist Antoine Tamestit.

The result is everything you might expect from from one of the world’s best film composers, and the world’s best classical music labels — a wonderful work, and a wonderful recording.
