In 1982, Bristol’s beloved video shop and self-proclaimed “film hangout hub” 20th Century Flicks opened its doors and became a key part of the city’s cultural landscape almost immediately. Over the past 40 years, it has retained its reputation as a temple for film fans and, to this day, you can still rent out discs and tapes or hire one of its two private cinemas for your dream screenings. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of this legendary establishment, a new film festival is coming to Bristol in May.

Forbidden Worlds promises three days of unmissable genre cinema, with a particular focus on some of the classics and trashterpieces that emerged in ‘82. Hosted in the former Bristol IMAX situated in Bristol Aquarium, festival-goers can expect to see some all-time gems on the 19m x 15m screen.

While the full line-up is yet to be revealed, there are already countless must-see screenings confirmed. Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Blade Runner and Aussie post-apoc classic Mad Max 2 top the bill, while acclaimed supernatural chiller Poltergeist also promises to be more frightening than ever on the IMAX screen. For those looking for something a little cheesier, Basket Case and Roger Corman’s Forbidden World will surely satisfy. Basket Case in IMAX. What a time to be alive.

Making up the current line-up are The Challenge, Thrilling Bloody Sword, The Dark Crystal, The Secret of NIMH and Dracula A.D. 1972 to mark the centenary of Christopher Lee’s birth. Another treat comes in the form of A History of 3D Cinema, a presentation in which film archivist Tom Vincent will discuss the storied history of the format and present some clips of classic movies, and some rarities that have never been screened before, all presented in digitally restored 3D versions.

Here’s hoping this festival becomes just as much an institution as 20th Century Flicks themselves, and that we will be attending the 40th iteration of the fest in 2062!

Forbidden Worlds Film Festival is taking place 13-15 May 2022 at the former Bristol IMAX Cinema at Bristol Aquarium. Weekend and day passes are now available, with individual

screening tickets to be launched at a later date. More information can be found here.
