On Christmas Eve, Marie is given a wooden nutcracker as a gift. When the clock strikes midnight, the Nutcracker transforms into a prince and saves Marie from the Mouse King and his army…

Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet will be showing the Christmas classic The Nutcracker in cinemas for one day only on Sunday, December 13th (with selected cinemas showing on different dates).

The beloved holiday classic will be making its way to cinema screens to enchant the whole family with its fairytale setting and Tchaikovsky’s timeless score. The Bolshoi’s version of the Nutcracker has a unique and beautiful sense of romance and philosophy, danced by the heroic Denis Rodkin and the magical Anna Nikulina as Marie.

More abstract and relying less on pantomime, the Bolshoi’s Nutcracker was imagined by Yuri Grigorovitch. eighty-eight, soon to be eighty-nine, this ballet master is a living legend of Russian ballet, celebrated for his re-stagings of the repertoire’s most famous pieces.

For The Nutcracker, Grigorovitch focuses on movement to bring out a philosophical tale of Marie’s coming-of-age along her journey to a world of magic and wonder.

The roles of the Nutcracker and Marie will be danced respectively by Denis Rodkin and Anna Nikulina. The two dancers are Grigorovich’s absolute favourites – part of the younger generation of the Bolshoi ballet. Both were elevated to the title of principals, the highest position in the Russian company’s hierarchy, last Summer.
