Shane Black, the writer-director behind this summer’s first massive hit Iron Man 3, has signed on to co-write and direct Doc Savage. Doc Savage, created by Lester Dent, came to fame in the ‘30s and ‘40s as one of the most popular pulp magazine heroes of the era. He’s been popularized in radio, film, comic books and television. Doc Savage is a physician, adventurer, inventor, explorer and researcher who happens to be trained in martial arts. Oh, and he has a photographic memory. With all these powers, and a group of military friends known as “The Fabulous Five”, Savage battles evil for those who can’t fight for themselves. A kind of vintage A-Team if you will. Black’s Iron Man 3 has just grossed $700 million at the global box office with that figure set to rise meaning he is nothing short of hot property right now. But then the writer behind such films as Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout was always the toast of Tinseltown. With any luck Black will bring some of his pulpy brilliance from films like Lethal Weapon and Robert Downey Jr. starrer Kiss Kiss Bang Bang to give Doc Savege a bit of a whip-smart edge. Black has also recently been linked to a remake of Japanese Manga adaptation Death Note but Savage seems like a better fit for the writer-director. Source – Sony Pictures via Coming Soon.
