Iron Man 3 & Fast 6 Prove Big Hitters At Box Office
Iron Man 3 and Fast & Furious 6 have both been busy little bees at the American and international box office with both heading towards massive records for their respective studios. Over the Memorial Day Weekend in the States, Fast 6 smashed the competition away like a mini being chased by a tank, to take a massive $120 million over the long weekend. That makes it the fourth biggest Memorial Day Weekend opening ever and put Todd Phillips’ The Hangover Part III to shame. That film made a still healthy $51.2 million despite very poor reviews. But more worrying for The Hangover is that figure pales in comparison to The Hangover Part II’s Memorial Day Weekend taking of $85 million takings. It seems that the appetite for The Wolf Pack is beginning to wane. With Fast 7 already in the works Universal must be confident that hunger for Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and fast cars is not going away anytime soon.
Iron Man 3, meanwhile, has now made a huge $1.142 billion at the global box office making it officially the fifth highest grossing film of all time. The films ahead of it remain Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, Titanic and of course the blue behemoth that is Avatar. But, crucially, Iron Man 3 is still in cinemas across the globe so we could see it jump at least Harry Potter. The film also becomes Disney’s second highest release of all time, again behind Avengers, and the biggest film of all time in Vietnam and Malaysia. Which ever way you cut it Iron Man 3 is a massive success and once again highlights that Marvel’s out-of-left-field director and writer choices, in this case Shane Black and Drew Pearce, have reaped huge rewards.
