Since re-boot franchise director JJ Abrams jumped ship for some small movie called Star Wars the Star Trek franchise has been looking for a new captain to take the helm. It seems they now found that in the form of Fast & Furious veteran Justin Lin who has beamed up for Star Trek 3.
Studio Paramount had been looking at all manner of directorial possibilities for the third film in the rebooted franchise including the likes of Rupert Wyatt, Daniel Espinosa, Duncan Jones and Morten Tyldum. All they came in the wake of Star Trek 1 & 2 writer Robert Orci, who had been slated to make the film his directorial debut, stepping aside from directing to produce the film. Lin became available due to Universal abandoning the Bourne Legacy franchise, at least for now, which he had been slated to direct because they are bringing back Paul Greengrass to direct with Matt Damon returning to the fold.
Lin has proved with the Fast & Furious films he can handle big, CGI-heavy action films with a good balance of ensemble cast shenanigans. The film is expected to be released around Christmas 2016. Source – Deadline
