#ReelNews Han Solo, Aunt May & Ghostbusters

This week’s #ReelNews includes Han Solo, Aunt May, Ghostbusters and so much more…. including Hello Kitty?

We know we’re going to be getting a new Star Wars saga, we know we’re getting new stand-alone Star Wars movie, starting with Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One, and now we know that another stand-alone movie will follow non-other than our favourite scruffy looking nerf herder in the shape of Han Solo.  What is perhaps even more exciting is that Jump Street and Lego Movie duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have signed on to direct the film which will tell the story of how a young Solo came to end up in the Cantina in Mos Eisley.  Unlike most of their material Lord and Miller won’t write the script which is instead being written by Wars veteran Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon.  The next big question will who can play a young Han Solo?  While many will be throwing all manner of young whipper-snapper names around we’ve long believed that Chris Pine is the closest thing to a young Harrison Ford we currently have, if JJ Abrams can make the jump from Star Trek to Star Wars why can’t Pine? He’s got the right level of cocky charm combined with world-weary worry.  Time will tell.  Source – Star Wars 

Having announced who will be the new Spider-Man, in the shape of youngster Tom Holland, attention of course now turns to who will fill out the supporting roles.  While nothing has been signed or confirmed the rumour has it that Sony are looking to Oscar winning Marisa Tomei to play Aunt May.  Sally Field played the role in the last incarnation with Andrew Garfield donning the Spidey suit.  We know that Spider-Man will make an appearance in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War but whether any of his more human cohorts will be seen is anyone’s guess.  Clown and Cop Car director Tom Watts is the man calling the shots for the latest Spidey outing. Source – Variety

With the key characters of the new Ghostbusters filled by the likes of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, not to mention Chris Hemsworth as their secretary, attention now turns to a villain for the piece.  Director Paul Feig is sticking to the comedy angle by casting Saturday Night Live veteran Neil Casey who will play a mysterious character called Rowan, which doesn’t make him sound like anything too supernatural so he could be one of those cynical types looking to shut the Ghostbusters down. Also on board is Andy Garcia, Matt Walsh and Michael K. Williams as well as a new look vehicle in the shape of ECTO-1.  Source – Deadline

Ben Affleck seems to be in to this whole Batman thing as news is emerging that he is not only co-writing but also looking to direct the next stand-alone Batman movie.  He’s already started work on the script for the film with DC Comics’ Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns which will look at how Batman’s involvement with The Justice League of America has affected him.  Of course before that we will see Batman in Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, then at least one Justice League film and potentially in Suicide Squad, if only in cameo form.  Affleck’s schedule is looking increasingly busy as he’s about to finally start filming on his next directorial effort which is an adaptation of Dennis Lehane‘s Live By Night.  Source – Deadline

Wesley Snipes continues his comeback with news that there could be another Blade movie in the offing.  Blade has of course reverted to its original owners Marvel but Snipes has recently been in talking to them about a potential Blade 4 and believes discussions went well.  While Marvel’s schedule is pretty full at the moment it could be a while before Blade is seen as a priority for them but Snipes hinted that he could be involved with another of their projects given recent talks with Marvel.  Source – Deadline

Duncan Jones, the visionary director behind such films as Moon and Source Code, might be busy putting the finishing touches to his top secret Warcraft film but that hasn’t stopped him lining up his next project.  The project in question has been a pet one for Jones since Moon and is said to be his homage to Blade Runner in so far as it is a noirish sic-fi called Mute.  Jones has been working on the comic incarnation of the story for a while but he’s hoping he can make it in the 11 months between picture lock on Warcraft and the film’s release in June 2016.  Little is known about the current incarnation of the plot other than it revolves around a mute bartender encountering all manner of woes while out looking for his missing girlfriend.  Jones is one of Hollywood’s most interesting and smart directors so this certainly has our interest peaked.  Source – Empire
