#ReelNews Tron, Eddie Redmayne, The Rock & More

It’s bad news for all the residents of The Grid as Disney have shut down plans to make Tron 3.  It seemed that the film was going full-steam ahead with stars Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund set to return and director Joseph Kosinski raring to boot-up his light-cycle once more.  No concrete reason has been given as to why the film has been put on pause but speculation is that Disney’s slate is pretty full thanks to their upcoming Marvel and Pixar films but some are speculating that Tomorrowland‘s less than impressive box office takings may be a cause for concern about the state of the sic-fi genre.  Source – The Hollywood Reporter

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson isn’t a man to stand still. Having seen his latest film San Andreas open big in the states, not to mention being part of Fast & Furious 7 now being the fourth biggest grossing film of all time, he’s turning his attention to another project in the shape of the Big Trouble In Little China remake. 20th Century Fox are looking to remake the John Carpenter film which starred Kurt Russell as a truck driver who is sucked into a centuries old feud in San Fransisco’s China Town. X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are re-working the film which just so happens to be one of Johnson’s all-time favourites. He would take on the lead of Jack Burton and given Russell was a strong build in the original he’d seem like a good fit. Johnson recently starred opposite Russell in Fast 7 so you’d think the great man would have given The Rock his blessing to take on the role should the project go ahead.  Johnson has a number of projects in the work including superhero movie Shazam for Warner Brothers and the strong possibility he’ll return to the Fast & Furious world for Fast 8.  Source – The Wrap 

Having recently won his Best Actor Oscar for The Theory Of Everything Eddie Redmayne is turning his attention to other pursuits of discover in the shape of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter spin-off. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Given the success of the Potter franchise Warner Bros. have green-lit a potential trilogy of films based on Rowling’s novella.  They won’t act as direct prequels to Potter but are set in the same world, roughly 70 years before Harry arrived at Hogwarts so around the 1920s, and will feature some familiar faces.  Redmayne will play the titular books author Newt Scamander with Potter veteran director David Yates set to call the shots.  Source – The Hollywood Reporter 

Emily Blunt, last seen heading Into The Woods, could be about to take a whole different journey as she’s in talks to star in the adaptation of The Girl On The Train.  Based on Paula Hawkins’ novel the story sees a woman struggling with divorce and alcoholism who sees a young couple on her commute into work each day.  When she one day wakes up from a drunken black-out covered in blood she fears she may have entered the couple’s lives in a dangerous way.  Kate Mara is in talks for another key role with The Help‘s Tate Taylor set to direct.  Source – The Wrap
