It’s been in the pipeline for sometime now but it seems Ryan Reynolds will indeed return to the Marvel-verse to play The Merc With A Mouth, Deadpool. Reynolds originally played the character of Deadpool, whose real name is Wade Wilson, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and at the time was strongly tipped to reprise the role in a stand-alone film.

So despite test footage for a Deadpool film being leaked a while ago (see it below) the film itself seemed to be stuck in development hell, until now.  Because now comes the news that Reynolds is indeed in the final stages of negotiating a deal to star with effects wizard Tim Miller all set to direct the film for Fox.  Reynolds seemed to confirm this via Twitter when he posted a picture, made up of ammo, of Deadpool’s face with the Deadpool catch-phrase “Uh… It’s Chimichanga Time.”

The role, as was seen in Origins, is perfectly suited to Reynolds dry delivery and sarcastic tones with Deadpool being a first in comic-book law in so far as he breaks the fourth wall, more than happy to address the reader.  Judging by the leaked test footage it’s likely that the film will stick with that gimmick to up the comedy ante.

Created in 1991 by artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza Deadpool quickly became a popular antihero of the Marvel world as the mercenary who was severely scarred due to experiments conducted on him and often flits between being a good guy and a villain.  The film is set for release in 2016 from a script by Zombieland duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.  Source – Deadline

Alex Moss’ obsession with film began the moment he witnessed the Alien burst forth from John Hurt’s stomach. It was perhaps ill-advised to witness this aged 6 but much like the beast within Hurt, he became infected by a parasite called ‘Movies’. Rarely away from his computer or a big screen, as he muses on Cinematic Deities, Alex is “more machine now than man. His mind is twisted and evil”. Email: alex.moss@filmjuice.com
