In a sense of destiny Steven Spielberg, who was set to direct Interstellar at one point, has taken over from Christopher Nolan to boot up to direct Ready Player One. The film will mark Spielberg’s return to the Sci-fi genre for the first time since 2005’s War Of The Worlds. Yes, we’re choosing to ignore the horrible Sci-fi ramifications of Kingdom Of The Crystal Skulls which only really happened in our nightmares, RIGHT?
Based on Ernie Cline‘s Young Adult novel Ready Player One tells the story of Wade Watts who, to escape the horrors of the real world he lives in, goes to the virtual world of Oasis (there are no Gallagher brothers here). But when Oasis’ founder dies he leaves his multi-billion dollar fortune to whoever can find it within the world of Oasis. Now Wade must battle all manner of cooperate operatives in Oasis and the real world in order to find the riches.
The book is chock-full of references to all manner of cult video games and modern culture which, if included in the final draft of the script, will come at no small cost to obtain the rights to.
Before all that Spielberg has a typically full roster of films. He’s just finished his Tom Hanks starrer Cold War thriller A Bridge Of Spies and is shortly expected to start work on his Roald Dahl adaptation of The BFG. Source – Deadline
