Samuel LoveFollowing the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, the third of which at the time was the most expensive film ever made, filmmaker Gore Verbinski wanted to do a “small” film. For anyone else, that would probably be a little single-location human drama. For Verbinski, though, it was a surreal, impeccably-animated Western adventure with a chameleon lead voiced by Johnny Depp. The Oscar-winning film remains one of the most bizarre animated family films of the 2000s, but it’s also one of the best – the flawless animation still looks dazzling (especially in 4K UHD), the jokes still land, and the old-school feeling of adventure is timeless. It’s a wonderful film. And any film that has Harry Dean Stanton voicing a mole named Balthazar can only be a masterpiece.
