Founded a year and a half ago by husband-and-wife team Andrew and Samantha, Filmhead Threads is a combination of the couple’s professional skills – Andrew studied Fine Art in University, while Samatha is a seamstress. When Samantha suggested the pair start a film-based clothing company, they bought a press and the rest is history, although “after lots of trial and errors”, they say!
All of their designs and production are done in-house. “We started out using very limited equipment but moved onto using a digital drawing tablet and that’s where we really found our style”, Andrew says. “There are thousands of t-shirt companies out there and we want to do something completely different to what you can find, whilst creating our own aesthetic. For example, we print little hidden quotes on the back of our neck labels. It’s these little details that we feel makes us different.”
While their catalogue is currently predominantly horror designs, there is certainly scope for branching out. “I’ve been trying to get a really great Robocop one from the start but have not found the right design in my head yet”, Andrew says. I’d buy that for a dollar! Other films Andrew and Samantha would like to cover include Alien, Blade Runner and Nosferatu – but they admit they tend to move towards Folk Horror. Designs of The VVitch and The Wicker Man are great indicators of Filmhead Threads’ style. There are some really fun, niche designs too that take a real fan to understand – their Jaws t-shirt, for example, is genius.
Other fun designs include a series of floorplan t-shirts inspired by Poltergeist, The Evil Dead and The Amityville Horror – passionately researched by watching the films with a sketchpad and pen, and painstakingly recreating these iconic settings in a unique blueprint style. And it’s wonderful to see some love for the BBC’s Ghost Stories for Christmas series with designs inspired by The Signalman and Whistle and I’ll Come to You. Most designs are also available as sweatshirts, too, so you can even layer up!
Filmhead Threads are showing no signs of slowing down, always looking for new cinematic inspirations. “With every design I feel we are getting a stronger recognisable brand, and we are both working so hard to deliver top quality products from the types of clothing we sell to the hand-drawn designs”, Andrew says. “We just want to share our love of what we are doing to everyone else and hopefully keep growing as a company. We both really love doing this and would be so grateful to be successful. I am always trying to make the next design even better than the one before.”
