Superman: Man Of Tomorrow is the 41st film in DC’s ever-expanding animated universe movies series. And while the Superman origin-story is perhaps one we’re all a little too familiar with, this new outing has some welcome surprises.
Man Of Tomorrow takes the audience back to the Blue Boy’s early days as an intern at the Daily Planet–and his beginnings as a learning-on-the-job super hero. Darren Criss and Zachary Quinto (Superman) have wholeheartedly embraced their roles as Superman and Luthor and the end result is a fresh look at characters that we all know and love.
Man Of Tomorrow has action aplenty, but humour and a genuine love for the source material is what shines through in this latest addition to the canon. Lex and Lois Lane (Alexandra Daddario) finally get to break free from of their origin-story stereotypes and become genuine 3D characters. Superman, too, is shown as more than just the square-jawed Boy Scout that’s become the default in recent adaptations.
However what makes this such a winner is addition of J’onn J’onzz, The Martian Manhunter (Ike Amadi) and Lobo (Ryan Hurst). In the post-Deadpool world it’s a surprise that DC have taken so long to showcase their own irreverent anti hero— so memorably re-imagined in the ‘90s by Alan Grant and Simon Bisley. He has had a few outings—both animated and live action—but neither the much discussed Guy Richie or the Michael Bay film have made it out of development hell. So perhaps this will give DC the impetus to put a full-length Lobo feature back on the radar. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy. Man Of Tomorrow is a fun ride and a great addition to the cannon.
