Samuel LoveNot since the original Speak No Evil has there been a film as utterly, depressingly cruel as this. The Coffee Table is one of the most uncomfortable, anxiety-inducing and nightmarish pitch-black comedies I’ve ever seen – it’s an endurance test for even the most seasoned fans of shock cinema. And frankly, The Coffee Table is pretty flawless in what it’s doing. Told over an excruciating 90 minutes, this impeccably-paced thriller presents every parent’s worst nightmare in chilling, unforgettable detail.
Second Sight Films’ Limited Edition Blu-ray release is – in a surprise to nobody – wonderful, boasting a fantastic selection of newly produced special features and a packed booklet filled with insightful essays surrounding the film. After a recent run of bonafide genre classics receiving the boutique label’s lavish treatment, it’s nice to see something a little more niche joining the catalogue – if you’re a fan of Second Sight’s carefully-curated collection of horror classics, you’ll agree that The Coffee Table is very deserving of a place in this illustrious series.
Synopsis
Jesus and Maria are a couple going through a difficult time in their relationship, with the added pressure of being new parents. They even argue over which coffee table to buy! When Jesus finally gets his way, it’s a decision that will shatter their lives forever.
