Samuel LoveThe epic story The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (or ‘dumbass’, as The Shawshank Redemption would teach you) is certainly no stranger to the big screen – it’s difficult to even count the number of adaptations. But until 2024, the most recent film adaptation was over 20 years ago. This new French-produced version, enormous in budget and scale, could just become the definitive take on the tale. Lavishly produced across the board, this masterful epic is an early contender for one of 2024’s best films. The film feels like a throwback to the glory days of big, big filmmaking and earns a recommendation as epic as itself. Très bien!
Synopsis
The target of a sinister plot, young Edmond Dantes is arrested on his wedding day for a crime he did not commit. After fourteen years in the island prison of Château d’If, he manages a daring escape.
