This gentle, poignant comedy is destined for classic status and will surely become a festive viewing staple alongside the most beloved Christmas films. Paul Giamatti has never been better than the curmudgeonly Professor Hunham while newcomer Dominic Sessa shines and Da’Vine Joy Randolph earns her Academy Award with one of the year’s best performances. While The Holdovers is definitely a Christmas film – regardless of what director Payne might say – the message is timeless and the themes are universal. The Holdovers is a warm, cosy film filled with compassion and understanding that should be required viewing for everyone. It might just make you a better person.
Synopsis
From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during the holiday break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them – a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) – and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
