The highest-grossing Hong Kong film for almost 15 years, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In is a 1980s-set gritty crime saga that feels like a real throwback to a bygone era of action cinema, and in particular, Hong Kong action cinema. Longtime fans of the subgenre will find a hell of a lot to love here, as the film feels like something of a ‘greatest hits’ mix of everything that has made these films so loved – look no further than the cast, which even includes HK legend Sammo Hung.
Adapted from the cult Manga series “City of Darkness” by Andy Seto and based on the novel by Yuyi, the ensemble all-star film is packed with incredible fight choreography and some of the most jaw-dropping action sequences of recent years – and while they are certainly slicker than early Hong Kong action flicks thanks to the slick CGI and high budget, it still feels distinctively of its genre. And while some action flicks like this fall apart when there’s no fighting going on thanks to their nonsensical, convoluted plots, Walled In is a genuinely compelling crime epic filled with interesting characters and brilliant performances. The production design is incredible also, taking us into a faithfully grimy and dark Kowloon Walled City. The impeccable visuals look fantastic on CineAsia’s 4K UHD disc, which also boasts over 45mins of behind-the-scenes content for a deeper look into the film.
Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In offers a winning combination of old-school 80s Hong Kong action with a big budget and state-of-the-art visuals, and the result is one of the best action films in years. Narratively compelling and packed with some real boundary-breaking action sequences, this is an absolute blast and a film that, with any luck, will go on to earn modern classic status.
