With the usual low-stakes, self-contained episodic structure of this subgenre, the series offers comforting and easy viewing – a lovely antidote to the more dour crime shows of today. Set against the scenic Kent backdrop and filled with likeable characters and a sweet will-they-won’t-they relationship at its heart, Whitstable Pearl is a delight.

Synopsis
With her son grown, single mum Pearl (Kerry Godliman) pursues her lifelong dream and starts a private detective agency, which she runs from her family seafood restaurant in the coastal town of Whitstable.
Drawn by her caring but no-nonsense nature, residents flock to her with all kinds of cases but when she discovers the dead body of her friend, DCI Mike McGuire (Howard Charles) arrives from London to lead the murder investigation. Gruff and aloof, Mike initially clashes with Pearl, but they soon find themselves working together to solve cases. Their relationship is charged by a determination to outdo each other and a simmering mutual attraction. When they compete, sparks fly and tempers flare; when they work together, they make a hell of a team.
Also starring Frances Barber, Rohan Nedd and Robert Webb, this mystery series is based on the bestselling books by Julie Wassmer.
