Samuel LoveDavid Fincher’s Zodiac stands not only as one of the celebrated director’s greatest achievements, but also as one of the finest films of the 21st century. A compelling study of obsession, the film tells the story of the notorious titular serial killer’s grip over 1970s San Francisco with Fincher’s usual unparalleled attention to detail and authenticity. Boasting eerily memorable visuals, unforgettable performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. and impeccable direction from Fincher, this modern classic is a masterpiece that has lost none of its power since its release almost 20 years ago. It’s not often a film comes along that you get a feeling will be discussed as one of ‘the classics’ in 50 years’ time, but Zodiac is almost certainly going to be in those conversations.
Following its 4K UHD release over in the US last year, a UK release is a case of better-late-than-never – thankfully, the disc is wonderful and perfectly represents Fincher’s intention with the film’s unsettling visuals. Highly recommended.
Synopsis
As the serial killer known as ‘Zodiac’ taunts the police with letters and cryptic clues, reporters and investigators become increasingly obsessed with finding the murderer’s identity, as the cat and mouse game impacts on their professional and personal lives.
