A Million Ways to Die in the West

Comedy is a subjective thing. What one person finds hysterical can often leave someone else cold. So, your reaction to A Million Ways to Die in the West depends on what you find funny.

Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane wrote and starred in this comedy western, in which a mild-mannered farmer, Albert, must find his place — and his courage — in the unforgiving world of 1880s Arizona. Along the way, he encounters Charlize Theron as an enigmatic femme fatale and Liam Neeson as her outlaw husband, who comes complete with a bad-guy snarl and a heavy Irish accent.

Some genuine pieces of gold are in amongst the pyrite, including the wonderfully warped and dark deaths, which often take place, uncommented on, in the background. But A Million Ways to Die pales in comparison to Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, which was said to have inspired the screenplay. In fact, A Million Ways to Die is cruder, and less subtle than Brooks’ famous take on the Western genre. But, if you like the sort of American humour typified by Airplane, then the chances are, this will tickle your funny bone.
