LEGO Scooby-Doo!: Haunted Hollywood

It’s only been two years since the Lego Movie but the number of cinema- and straight-to-DVD Lego movies seems to be expanding exponentially. LEGO Batman, LEGO Justice League, LEGO Ninjago… and the latest addition to the franchise, LEGO Scooby-Doo!

Yes – that’s right. Our favourite geek gang have been LEGO-ised. Admittedly there isn’t really any reason for Scooby, Shaggy and co to have been given a brick makeover, beyond selling the obligatory tie-in play sets, but Haunted Hollywood is heaps of fun.

As classic movie monsters run amok in an ageing studio, Scooby and the gang must unpick the clues and line up the suspects before the ultimate reveal. The storyline and humour are pure Scooby-Doo! Where Are You? Velma (Kate Micucci), as always, is the brains of the operation. Fred (Frank Welker) and Daphne (Grey Griffin) continue to be simultaneously dopy and stye-challenged. Scooby (Frank Welker) and Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) eat themselves silly while and creating monster-fuelled mayhem.

The voice cast, headed by the always superb Frank Welker, are excellent and while the animation isn’t up to LEGO Movie levels, it has tons of charm. The sound of plastic LEGO footsteps is never going to get old.

Despite being straight-to-DVD, Haunted Hollywood is a quality product. Faithful to both franchises, and engaging enough for big- and little kids.

There’s nothing here that will rock your world but if you’re a Scooby and LEGO fan then this is one mashup you’re sure to enjoy. And if you’re not a Scooby and LEGO fan, what’s wrong with you?
