Samuel LoveIt’s perhaps unexpected that 1986 medieval mystery The Name of the Rose should receive the Second Sight Films treatment, but the result is another must-own release from a label that continues to demonstrate just how much care can be lavished on even the most unlikely titles. The richly produced period thriller is given a sumptuous presentation, while the wealth of special features on the disc and writings in the booklet add further depth to a film already ripe for rediscovery. What could initially seem an unconventional choice for such a prestigious release from the label ultimately feels inspired, transforming The Name of the Rose into a beautifully curated package and another jewel in Second Sight’s crown. A must-own.
Synopsis
An aging friar and his young apprentice investigate a series of mysterious deaths at a monastery. The pair must race against time to prove the innocence of an unjustly accused man while avoiding the wrath of a Holy Inquisitor.
