The SpongeBob Movie: A Sponge Out of Water

In DVD/Blu-ray by Janet Leigh

Are you ready kids? Aye, aye captain. It’s a crazy ride for our favourite Bikini bottom gang.

Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) is at it again. Krab’s tiny nemesis has cooked up a plan to steal the famous Krabby Patty formula and it’s Spongebob (Tom Kenny) to the rescue. However when the coveted recipe disappears into thin air the two must join forces to retrieve the secret formula and save the burger savage residence of Bikini Bottom from rioting chaos.

Much like the television show a whole mass of quirkiness unfolds. Time travelling and guardian dolphins to name a few unusual tidbits. If that isn’t enough craziness for one film SpongeBob, Plankton and co. manage to attain a culmination of ridiculously hilarious superpowers along the way. Because what world wouldn’t be made better by a hero that can telekinetically transport ice-cream?

A thoroughly entertaining watch, however, despite the name of the film The SpongeBob Movie: A Sponge Out of Water, it feels as though much of the action takes place in the depths of the ocean. Consequently viewers have a lengthy wait for the land bound antics to take place and when it finally happens the action is sweet but short.

That said the movie is a collection of laugh out loud moments to keep things ticking on in the meantime.

As usual the regular cast is on top form. Bill Fagerbakke is always a delight as dim-witted Patrick Star as was Clancy Brown’s money pinching Krabs. Antonio Banderas is an additional treat to watch as Burger-Beard the pirate.

The movie’s transition from 2D to CGI was purposely placed to clearly highlight the division between underwater and land. Necessary? Probably not but it is smooth and creatively done.

Overall a worthy watch with an incredible soundtrack.
