BAFTA 2013
It was apt that SkyFall was deemed Outstanding British Film at this year’s 66th BAFTA awards as the rain and eventual snow lashed down on the red carpet and its shivering stars.
It was apt that SkyFall
was deemed Outstanding British Film at this year’s 66th BAFTA awards
as the rain and eventual snow lashed down on the red carpet and its shivering
stars. It was puddles that greeted the likes of Daniel Day Lewis, Bradley
Cooper and Ben Affleck as well
as the usual camera flashes as they stepped into Covent Garden on a blustery
Sunday evening in February as.
Even torrential downpours couldn’t deter fans as they donned
their waterproofs and greeted their idols. As well as nominees, awards hosts Martin Freeman, Sarah Jessica Parker, new Superman star Henry Cavill and Nicholas
Hoult amongst many others were present in all their finery for the biggest
event in the British film calendar.
From a soggy vantage point on the red carpet could be seen
Best Supporting Actress winner Anne
Hathaway and the Big Friendly Giant of Hollywood Quentin Tarantino stride in from the rain while a radiant Jessica Chastain and rugged Hugh Jackman did the press sweep,
making sure to dash over to fans in between interviews. George Clooney scooted past shaking hands with as many people as he
could and Helen Mirren sporting a
new pink do swished her Nicholas Oakwell gown at every opportunity.
Out of the cold and into the Royal Opera House in London’s
Coven Garden, and the winning results couldn’t be more of a surprise. With a
fairly level playing field this year in terms of nominees, triumph and
gratitude came to a welcome variety of recipients, with Tarantino’s Django Unchained and Ben Affleck’s Argo scooping some of the bigger prizes of the
evening. Given Affleck’s notable shun from this year’s OSCARs, picking up best
director and best film of 2013 left the actor, writer and director overwhelmed
and hopefully leaving the Academy feeling quite foolish as he thanked his peers
and family from the stage.
Christoph Waltz
delivered a moving dedication to Tarantino as he scooped up his prize for Best
Supporting Actor, and Daniel Day Lewis’s
sincerity and Anne Hathaway’s teary
praise definitely made this the year of the humble acceptance speech.
The EE Rising Star Award was delivered to a shaking Juno Temple, whose body of work for a
23 year old comes as varied as it gets. You can read our interview with her HERE
