Social media has become deeply ingrained within modern society. In fact, could we now imagine our lives without it? With celebrities, media companies and the general population tweeting, liking and blogging to their heart’s content, the global community has found a way of reaching one another on a one to one basis every single day, bringing people together.
The film industry has embraced the concept of social media and the benefits it has in reaching the global community. Where once movie companies relied on marketing in magazines, television and radio, they now have the super-power of the internet and the platform of social networking sites to reach billions. A recent example of this is Paranormal Activity. A low budget movie, it launched itself from the platform of Facebook and went on to gain massive popularity and make millions. In fact Paranormal Activity 3, out now, allowed Twitter users to “Tweet Your Scream” before the film’s release, engaging interest in the film before it even hit cinemas. Before long, millions of users were tweeting their thoughts on the film’s trailer.
The film industry has also increasingly been using Facebook and Twitter to promote films, showing previews and full trailers. Although we all know that we can access this information through the likes of You Tube and directly on the movie websites, social media allows it to be instantaneously accessible to billions worldwide. Animated feature film, Rango, used the concept of Facebook games by incorporating the main character into a widely used ‘Zynga’ game and making watching the movie trailer one of the games ‘missions.’
