Yesterday Director David Ayer revealed a cast photo of his upcoming DC Comic adaptation Suicide Squad. One noticeable absentee was Batman’s arch-nemesis The Joker. But today comes the reveal that Jared Leto, who is playing the Clown Prince Of Crime aka The Joker, is very much in character and paying homage in the best way possible.
While Leto isn’t in full make-up in the picture above he is striking the pose of the cover of Allan Moore‘s definitive Joker origin story The Killing Joke. What does this all mean for Suicide Squad? Well not much in the long run but it does hint that all involved are well versed in the history of The Joker and recognise that The Killing Joke is not a bad place to start in drawing inspiration from.
The Suicide Squad is a gang of DC Comic villains and anti-heroes who, for reduced jail sentences, perform jobs for the American Government which are deemed too morally grey for them to ever confess to having anything to do with. The cast include Will Smith as assassin Headshot, Margot Robbie as The Joker’s squeeze Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc and Viola Davis as Amanda Walker, the Nick Fury of this mismatched group of villainous Avengers.
Ayer is the man behind Fury and End Of Watch with Suicide Squad aiming for a release next summer, it will mark the first time we’ve seen Leto on screens since he wore another kind of make-up for his Oscar winning turn in The Dallas Buyers Club. Source – David Ayer
