Justice Society: World War II

In DVD/Blu-ray by Paula Hammond - Features Editor

Justice Society: World War II is the latest entry in the popular series of DC Universe Animated Movies… and this time, they’re going old school, leaving a modern-day Barry Allen reeling from his first encounter with the Speed Force.

Set prior to the formation of the Justice League, The Flash finds himself thrown into the the midst of a raging battle, in which a team of super-heroes, led by Wonder Woman, are fighting for the very survival of their world.

DC Universe movies are an odd thing—budget productions, which are actually far more satisfying and daring than their live-action counterparts. While the recent spate of DC live action films have been dogged by seemingly endless backstories and sluggish plot lines, these animated releases are genuine fan pleasers—that never hold back—and never, ever patronise.

Jeff Wamester (Guardians Of The Galaxy TV series) directs from a screenplay by Meghan Fitzmartin (Supernatural, DC Super Hero Girls) and Jeremy Adams (Supernatural, Batman: Soul Of The Dragon)and the feel is very much of being in safe geek-hands.

Justice Society: World War II jumps straight into the meat of the action, with characters that, if this were a live-action film, would each be afforded half an hour of unnecessary exposition. Featuring Hourman, Black Canary, Hawkman, Steve Trevor, and the Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick, Justice Society is rip-roaring tale of supers, combined with the aesthetics of a World War II thriller. Golden Age DC Super Heroes punching Nazis? What’s not to like?

Justice Society: World War II  is released on digital download, on Blu-ray, and DVD. The Blu-ray includes a host of impressive behind-the-scenes extras, and special packs feature a Flash mini-figure.
