Shakespeare in Church

Antic Disposition‘s critically acclaimed WWI adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Henry V (with additional words by AE Housman) returns next week for a limited season of performances in the awe-inspiring setting of London’s beautiful Temple Church, following a sold-out run at Bath Abbey earlier in the month.

Performed by a talented international cast of British and French actors, this immersive production celebrates the rich and turbulent relationship between our two nations, from the Hundred Years War to the Entente Cordiale.

Founded in 2005 by director Ben Horslen and director/designer John Risebero, Antic Disposition is a Peter Brook Award-winning company specialising in innovative and unique interpretations of classic plays and stories, with a particular emphasis on the works of Shakespeare. Based in London and Bath, the company has earned a very strong reputation – and indeed much well-deserved critical acclaim – for its high quality, visually striking productions presented in historic buildings and unusual non-theatre spaces.

Their celebrated production of Henry V, first performed in 2015, has earned rave reviews with LondonTheatre1 calling it “a truly amazing production which left (them) spellbound and speechless”, and returns to the stage from 27 May – 4 June 2022 in London.

About the play

England’s idealistic army marches to war, certain of a swift and glorious victory. France proudly rallies to defend her borders from invasion. But as nations clash, it is the common soldiers who pay the ultimate price in the bloody mud of the battlefield. Moving effortlessly between 1415 and 1915, the production combines Shakespeare’s epic play with original songs inspired by the poetry of AE Housman, in a powerful tribute to the young soldiers caught up in conflicts five centuries apart – and a timely call for peace in Europe.
