Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska, stars last seen in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Stoker respectively, have both signed on to star in Carol. The film, which is based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Prince Of Salt, is set in New York of the 1950s and sees a young girl in her 20s, struggling through a department store job, who befriends, and falls in love with a wife trapped in a loveless marriage. The book, which Highsmith wrote under the name Claire Morgan, became famous for its lesbian love story which bucked the trend of the time by having a happy ending. Phyllis Nagy is adapting the book to script form with Far From Heaven and I’m Not There director Todd Haynes directing. Throw into the mix Interview With A Vampire and The Crying Game producer Stephen Woolley overseeing the project and Carol is shaping up to be a high-calibre affair. Blanchett will next be seen in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine before heading to Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups while Wasikowska will next appear in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive.
