The Blob Getting Another Remake

First released to classic B-movie fanfare in 1958 and then getting a remake in 1988 it looks like The Blob is getting another remake.  This time it comes courtesy of Con Air and Tomb Raider director Simon West.  The original film saw Steve McQueen battling a gelatinous blob which had spawned from a crashed meteor in a small town.  The sequel saw Entourage’s Kevin Dillion as a bad boy outsider battling the blob that had come down in a crashed satellite.  The ’88 remake was co-written by none other than The Shawshank Redemption’s Frank Darabont.  James Gunn’s Slither also borrowed liberally from parts of it to comedy horror brilliance.

This new incarnation will utilise the magic of CGI which director West claims ““With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob.”  The film will be produced by Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten who recently completed work on Stephen King adaptation Cell which stars John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson and they’ll be helped by original 1958 producer Jack H Harris who will act as executive this time around.

The original ’58 film looks a little kitsch these days but the ’88 version still has some great moments and a fun level of gore.  Whether or not the latest incarnation will dare for anything like a bit of digested icky people remains to be seen but production is set to start later this year. Source – Deadline
