“We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better … stronger… faster…”
If these words send a thrill of anticipation running down your spine, then you’re in for a treat. Hell, even if The Six Million Dollar Man means nothing to you, Fabulous Films’ latest box set is eminently binge-watchable.
After crashing during an experimental aircraft test, astronaut Steve Austin (Lee Majors) is barely alive and clinging to life. The government decide use funding for a secret bionics project to create the next generation of covert operative—an agent with bionic limbs that give him superhuman strength, along with a bionic eye that allows him to see details over a mile away. When Colonel Austin wakes up, he now has to processes the implications of this second chance at life, while juggling the missions that his new skills make possible.
Based on the book Cyborg by Martin Caidin The Six Million Dollar Man was prime family viewing, with storylines that blended sci-fi, with action, spy drama, aliens, Bigfoot, and even the odd tear-jerker.
The result, almost 50 years after its initial run, is still tons of fun—a little ludicrous and dated on places, sure, but quality all the same.
Like all period shows, it’s fun to lay ‘spot the famous face’ and you won’t be disappointed. Guests on the show including Andre the Giant and Ted Cassidy (Lurch) Kim Basinger, George Takei, William Shatner, Stefanie Mills, and Jenny Agutter. Sandra Bullock had an early major screen role in Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman, one of three made-for-television movies included in the extras. The movie sees Bullock becoming bionic and assisting the Bionic Woman and Six Million Dollar Man to catch a bionic spy. Bullock’s character was written along to possibly develop for a spin-off series —although nothing panned out. Bryan Cranston also guest starred in the first of the television movies (The Return Of The Six Million Dollar Man And The Bionic Woman) which he talks about in the extras.
The Complete Collection box set includes 100 uncut episodes across 5 seasons, all digitally re-mastered and restored in high-definition, with an incredible 1479 minutes of extras. And these extras really are a wow—both extensive and well curated.
